Police investigate the smash and grab of Mobil Mart on Dunedin's Anzac Avenue.

Police are investigating the smash and grab from a Dunedin petrol station, the second incident of cigarettes being targetted in less than a week.

The Mobil Mart on Anzac Ave was closed when burglars smashed their way and stole an undisclosed amount of cigarettes, on Wednesday about 4.30am, Senior Sergeant Ben Butterfield said.

Police were appealing for any information about the smash and grab, or wanted to talk to anyone offered cheap cigarettes for sale.

It comes just days after a Dunedin dairy was held up by a man armed with a fake weapon, and who remains at large.

Police were called to the Lookout Point Food Centre on Riselaw Rd on Sunday about 5pm.

It was too early to say if the two incidents were linked, Butterfield said.

Police had CCTV footage from both incidents but were yet to release any images.
