Man charged over hit and run that killed teenage skateboarder
A 33-year-old man has been charged over the hit and run that killed young skateboarder Jacob Pakura.
The 16-year-old died late on Saturday night after being found unconscious on Rua Rd in New Lynn, West Auckland.
He was treated by emergency services but they could not save him.
Police said a west Auckland man was arrested on Tuesday and would appear in the Waitakere District Court on Wednesday morning.
He is charged with dangerous driving causing death, failing to stop and ascertain injury or death after a crash, and dangerous driving.
The arrest came as a result of information provided by the public, police said.
Jacob, who was hearing impaired and had a cochlear implant, was described as an "awesome" boy who loved his skateboard and had lots of friends.
On Monday, his family issued an emotional plea for the driver to come forward.
"When this person hit Jacob and they left, they hit our family," his mother Esther Pakura said.
His sister Jasmin said the driver had taken away "everything that this boy loved".
"Please give our family some closure and come forward."
Waitemata police area commander Inspector Trevor Beggs said Jacob sustained "terrible injuries to his entire body" in the crash.
"To have left a young man lying in the road with catastrophic injuries like this is just simply unthinkable."
Police said the Pakura family was relieved at news of the arrest and wanted to thank all the people who had called police with information.
