A magnitude 4.5 earthquake that shook Fiordland was felt in Invercargill. The quake was also reportedly felt in Riverton and Balfour.
GeoNet reported the earthquake, which hit at 6.45pm at a depth of 65km, was located 45km west of Te Anau.
