An empty house in Porirua Hospital grounds has been gutted by fire.
Police suspect the fire, which started around 5am, was deliberately lit.
Sergeant Steve Keleher said detectives and fire investigators were carrying out inquiries at the scene this morning.
The fire was being treated as suspicious.
At least 50 per cent of the building was gone and it would probably have to be demolished.
A Porirua fireman said three fire engines were sent to fight the blaze in what looked to be an unoccupied staff house in the grounds of the former psychiatric hospital.
