Kaikoura earthquake rattles New Zealand
A strong 5.1-magnitude earthquake has struck near Kaikoura and been felt by thousands of people.

The quake, which hit at 11.24pm on Wednesday night, was centred 10km north-east of Kaikoura at a depth of 16km.
The quake was felt in the South Island, and as far north as Auckland, according to felt reports on GeoNet.
More than 2000 people reported feeling the quake which was rated as "strong" by GeoNet.
There were no quake-related police or Fire Service callouts overnight on Thursday.

Those who felt the shake took to social media to share their thoughts on it. One person described it as a gentle rocking that did not rattle them much.
