Two serious crashes on State Highway 1 have left one woman dead and two others trapped and injured in their vehicle.
The first crash killed the 24-year-old woman after the car she was driving left the road and rolled into a ditch, east of Marton in the Rangitikei district.
Inspector Chris Tate of police communications said police were called to the crash about 10.45 last night.
The woman was the sole occupant and no other vehicles were involved.
The second crash happened on the Eastern Taupo Arterial section of State Highway 1 about 5.30 this morning.
Two people were trapped in the wreckage after their vehicle was involved in a crash with a truck.
Police and emergency services were still at the scene at 7.30am. Police could not say what condition the people were in but there are reports one person was critical and was flown to Waikato hospital.
The bypass road will be closed between Broadlands Rd and the overbridge.
Motorists are advised to take alternative routes, including via Taupo, until further notice.
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
