A Wellington boatie has been winched to safety off the rocks, after he ended up in the water off the south coast.
The 50-year-old-man was heard yelling for help at about 7.20pm this evening.
"He has obviously got into some sort of trouble," Inspector Ian Harris, of police central communications, said.
The man was believed to have been checking some nets he set earlier in the day at the south western end of Lyall Bay.
It was not yet clear if his boat sank or if he fell into the sea.
The police launch Lady Elizabeth IV and Wellington-based Life Flight Westpac Rescue Helicopter were called in to help.
The man was winched from the rocks in darkness by the helicopter crew.
