Boy dies after horse bolts

A 10-year-old boy has been killed after being dragged by a horse when it bolted on him.

A police spokesman said the incident happened at 6.30pm at a property in Waiomio- a remote settlement near the top of Northland, about five minutes south of Kawakawa.

Emergency services were called to the scene. The circumstances of the incident are still being investigated.

The matter has been referred to the Coroner.
