A man has been arrested after a woman was found dead outside a block of flats in the Christchurch suburb of Spreydon tonight.
Detective Senior Sergeant Brian Archer said police received calls from a resident of the Macgibbon Pl complex about 6.30pm reporting that a woman was dead.
On arrival police found the body of a woman outside one of the units.
A 59-year old Christchurch man, who lives in a nearby unit, was located at the complex and arrested without incident, police said.
He has been charged with assault in relation to the incident, and will appear in the Christchurch District Court on Monday.
Archer said it was likely more serious charges would be laid. Police are not seeking any one else in relation to the death.
The identity of the victim has not been confirmed, other than that she was resident of the complex.
The scene has been cordoned off and a scene examination will be carried out tomorrow.
