Police are yet to speak with a man left with serious stab wounds outside Christchurch Hospital last night.
Detective sergeant Hamish Wilson said the man, found outside the emergency department about 8pm, was ''still with us'' and police hoped he would make a full recovery.
But he was not yet in a position to be spoken to, so police had not yet interviewed him to find out how he came to be injured or delivered to hospital.
''We're looking at a number of circumstances that may have led to his injuries.''
The man is believed to have been living in Christchurch.
It comes just days after two stabbing incidents in Auckland in a matter of hours.
A man received life-threatening stab wounds after a serious assault in Papakura, Auckland, early on Friday morning.
Another man in his forties was taken to Middlemore Hospital with a wound in his back after an incident in Clark's beach about 6pm, Thursday.
He was in a serious - but not critical - condition on Friday.
