A rescue helicopter from Dunedin is airlifting an injured tramper from the Temple Basin near Arthur's Pass.
Inspector Peter Hegarty said the injured person was one of a group of 13 students, but it was not known the extent of the injuries or how they were sustained.
He said emergency services were alerted just after 9pm.
Bad weather weather had prevented a helicopter coming in from the West Coast side of the Southern Alps to airlift the injured person.
