Police are investigating the events surrounding the death.

 A body has been found under a bridge on the outskirts of Motueka, near Nelson.

Police were alerted to the discovery of a dead person under the Motueka Bridge, north of the town on State Highway 60, at 5.55pm.

"I can confirm a body has been found and police are on the scene," a police spokesperson said.

"Police are treating the death as unexplained at this stage. It is not thought to be suspicious.

"Police aren't seeking any information from the public at this stage."

Police are in the process of formally identifying the deceased before notifying their family and loved ones.

The circumstances of the death are not yet known.
