Snorkeller missing near Kaikoura
A search is under way for a missing snorkeller near Kaikoura Peninsula.
Marlborough police area prevention manager Senior Sergeant Peter Payne said the man's wife raised the alarm about 7.30pm on Sunday after he had not returned from his dive.
"At that stage [Search and Rescue] were notified. Coastguard Kaikoura made a search into the dark, [but] couldn't locate him."
The diver, a 55-year-old Chinese man who lives in Christchurch, went snorkelling near an area known as Shark Tooth Point about 3pm.
He was due out of the water about 5pm. The snorkeller and his wife had travelled to Kaikoura for the day.
The search resumed this morning, with a helicopter and Land Search and Rescue. A diver's catch-bag, speargun, float and hand net have been located.
The police dive squad are travelling from Wellington, and are expected to join the search on Monday afternoon.
Another shoreline search is also expected at low tide, about 5.30pm.
