A year 12 student at Te Aute College has died after a serious asthma attack.
Acting Principal Bill Adams said the boy collapsed and died in a hostel at the Maori Boy's College near Hastings yesterday morning.
Adams said the boy told hostel staff he was having a serious asthma attack and an ambulance was called immediately.
The boy collapsed before the ambulance arrived and although paramedics worked on him for 45 minutes he could not be resuscitated.
Adams said the boy was one of two brothers at the school.
He was ''part of a really strong family who are great supporters of the school. They and the rest of the school are devastated by this. He is a lovely boy with lots of friends at every level of the school,'' Adams said.
Commissioner Elizabeth Ellis asked for privacy ''as we deal with losing a terrific young man''.
