Car struck by train near Taihape
Emergency Services were called to the Ruru Rd railway crossing just off State Highway 1 after a freight train hit a car just before 7.45am on Tuesday.
St John spokesman Richard Schulze said the person was in a stable condition and their injuries, classed as moderate, were not life-threatening.
Whanganui Hospital spokesman said the person was discharged that morning.
Kiwirail spokesman Simon Kilroy said a full investigation into the crash was under way, and at this stage the warning bells and lights at the crossing seem to have been working at the time.
The train driver had also been assessed by paramedics after the incident, but had not suffered any serious injury.
Kilroy said the driver was shaken after the crash, and was taking time off to recover.
"Events like this are traumatic for all involved, and in line with usual practice the driver has been relieved [of duty]."
