The train tracks from Christchurch to Greymouth have been closed after a coal train bogie derailed this morning.
The incident happened at about 4am as the train was making its way to Christchurch from Greymouth. The bogie, which was at the end of the train, came off the tracks but it has since been rerailed and the train continued on its way to Christchurch, said a Kiwirail spokeswoman. No one was hurt in the incident.
It is not known what caused the accident, and Kiwirail are assessing both the train and the tracks for causes.
The train tracks have been closed for assessment and to repair any damage caused by the bogie coming off it. It should be reopened by late tomorrow morning.
The spokeswoman said as a result of the tracks being closed for assessment, TranzAlpine passengers have been put onto replacement buses.
