One dead in South Waikato crash
A man is dead after a car rolled on State Highway 1 near Putaruru.
Emergency services were called to the scene on State Highway 1, 4km south of Putaruru in South Waikato, about 5.45pm on Thursday.
Two cars were involved in a head-on crash. The driver of one of the cars died at the scene.
The male driver of the second car was taken to hospital with moderate injuries.
Police Senior Sergeant Fane Troy said the investigation is still in the early stages but made a plea to drivers.
"All motorists are reminded to only drive when they are well rested, to avoid distractions and to drive to the conditions," Troy said.
Earlier, Northern Fire Communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said there are two cars at the scene and one person is dead.
Three fire crews from the Putaruru Volunteer Fire Brigade and police were at the scene.
The road was closed after the crash but was set to re-open at 11pm.
The Serious Crash Unit was investigating.
