Woman injured in accidental shooting near Queenstown
A woman has been injured in an accidental shooting near Queenstown.
Police were called at 1.10pm on Monday to a property on Ashenhurst Way, in the Shotover Country subdivision north of Queenstown.
A St John spokesman said the woman was taken to Lakes District Hospital with moderate injuries before being airlifted to Dunedin Hospital.
Sergeant Keith Newell said the woman, aged about 40, was shot in the stomach in the garage of her home.
It appeared to be an "accidental discharge", he said.
Another officer at the scene suggested the incident may have happened while someone was cleaning the gun.
Neighbour Kim Carpenter said he heard a loud bang, "like a loud something slamming on the ground".
Four police cars and an ambulance were at the scene quickly.
He said the people were new to the neighbourhood and he would smile and wave to them, but did not know them personally.
Police were not looking for anyone in relation to the incident, and there was no threat to the public, they said.
An investigation is continuing.
