Five cyclists are seriously injured after a car drove into a group of seven riders north of Hamilton this afternoon.
The accident happened near the intersection of Lake Rd and Dawson Rd, Taupiri, about 4:25pm.
Three cyclists suffered serious injuries and were flown to hospital, while two riders sustained moderate injuries and two was unhurt, according to a witness at the scene.
The driver of the car stopped, police northern communications Inspector Barry Smalley said.
''I couldn't tell you whether charges will be laid and I don't know whether he's done anything to land him in custody.
"What he's done is obviously not good, but I don't think it would involve him being locked up for the night unless there were some additional things that were taken into consideration.''
The Serious Crash Unit would investigate the cause of the crash.
