One dead after logging truck crash in Waikato
A logging crew watched in horror as a fully laden truck and trailer unit carrying logs rolled down a steep bank and into a creek.
The male driver, who is yet to be identified, was transporting logs from an area of Te Anga Rd, Waitomo, when on a tight bend on the same road the truck rolled over the bank and into a creek, killing the driver around 10am on Thursday.
A nearby bush crew, who did not know the driver, ran to the scene. Another man, driving a camper van, also stopped and told them he was a doctor.
The crew said the doctor checked the driver's vital signs before informing the bush crew that the driver was dead.
The doctor then drove off and the police are now looking for him.
"We need to know who the doctor is," Te Kuiti sergeant Warren Shaw said.
"He confirmed the death, then left."
Shaw said the incident happened about 8 km east of Waitomo.
"The fully laden truck and trailer has gone off the road and rolled into the stream.
"It's a single vehicle crash. The driver has been found dead at the scene."
Police could not give details on how the man died because the serious crash unit were still investigating.
Te Anga Rd was closed with diversions in place.
The driver's body was still trapped at the scene on Thursday afternoon and police were waiting for crane to lift the truck.
