A truck has lost its load near Mangatarata.

A truck lost its load leaving "one hell of a mess" on the road south of Mangatarata.

The back door of a truck carrying offal failed on Thursday, spilling animal flesh about five metres along SH27, north of Kaihere. 

Police were called to assist with traffic at 5:30pm on Thursday, Senior Sergeant Peter van de Wetering said.

The area was reduced to one lane while contractors worked to clear the road.

"The mess is north of Kaihere, between Kaihere turn off. We are warning drivers to slow down.

"It's literally one hell of a mess," he said.

Police have advised people to drive carefully as they approach the area.
