Man rescued from sinking boat near Mercer
A skipper made an early morning SOS call to police when his boat started taking on water.
The boatie called police at 3.30am on Friday after the man's five metre boat hit a log on the Waikato River causing the motor to break.
Giving police a guesstimate of his whereabouts, emergency services trawled the river from Ngaruawahia, eventually finding the man and his boat afloat near Mercer.
The man was rescued without injury.
Waikato police senior sergeant Dean Anderson said emergency services launched a boat to rescue the man.
"He thought he was in Ngaruawahia because he recognised the lights but he drifted toward Mercer and he was brought safely to shore."
