Sodden soils should be able to dry out, with settled weather through to Anzac Day
A period of settled weather, with a few showers in the mix, should give sodden soils a chance to dry out through the weekend and up until Anzac Day.
While many areas are expected to have some showers, dry and largely settled weather is the dominant feature of the weather outlook for the next five days.
Anzac Day has made it onto MetService's five-day forecast - which is produced by meteorologists, rather than the computers that generate the predictions for days 6-10 - and is looking good for most of the country.
For now, the forecast shows showers possible at dawn services in eastern areas from Gisborne to Wellington.
Over the weekend and into Monday, the area with the biggest risk of unsettled weather is Northland, with a chance of showers from Friday to Monday.
A front is expected to move onto the far south of the South Island overnight Sunday, and many parts of the South Island, although not Nelson and Marlborough, have a chance of showers on Monday.
Auckland is expected to have cloudy periods on Friday, with a few showers from evening and a high of 18 degrees Celsius. The forecast for Saturday is good but showers are possible on Sunday and Monday.
Wellington should have a fine Friday, with northerlies developing and a high of 16C. It is expected to be dry and slightly warmer during the weekend.
Christchurch is set for three sunny days, with an 18C high on Friday, edging up to 21C by Sunday. Showers and southerlies intervene on Monday, while Tuesday is set to be dry.
Hamilton is expected to have a fine Friday with light winds and an 18C high. It's forecast to stay dry through the next five days. Tauranga is looking at five mostly sunny days, with highs from 18C on Friday to 21C on Monday.
A sunny 18C Friday is also forecast for New Plymouth, which should stay dry through to the end of Anzac Day. Napier should become sunny on Friday afternoon, also with an 18C high, with a fine weekend to follow, but showers are on the way for the start of next week.
A sunny 17C Friday is on the way for Palmerston North, and it should stay mostly dry through the five days, although there's a chance of showers on Monday. Nelson is set for a sunny 18C Friday, followed by a run of dry days.
Dunedin is yet another place headed for 18C on a mostly fine Friday.
