School bus crashes into ditch
A school bus, carrying students from three Whanganui schools, has crashed into a ditch injuring several passengers.
Northern fire communications shift manager Scott Osmond said the bus - with 53 on board - was travelling on State Highway 4, about 7 kilometres south of Taumarunui, when it crashed into a ditch just before 12.30pm.
Eight people were injured, including two teachers and five students. One student was airlifted to hospital.
Osmond said firefighters helped get people on to stretchers, but all those injured were able to get out of the bus after some seats were unbolted.
Police said the bus was on the way to the Nga Manu Korero 2013 National Secondary Schools Speech Contest, in Hamilton.
The police Serious Crash Unit and the Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit would investigate the crash.
