A 20 year old woman was killed and three others seriously injured in a crash in central Auckland early this morning.
At 5.30am police were alerted to a vehicle which had crashed into a power pole, killing one of its occupants on Carrington Rd in Point Chevalier.
A young woman who was driving the car was killed, and police are awaiting the results of a postmortem toxicology to find whether she had been drinking alcohol.
Two men and a woman passenger were seriously injured and are in a stable condition in Auckland City Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Police said it took time to identify the driver as the passengers were semi-conscious from the impact, Auckland central police senior sergeant Matt Knowsley said.
"The four occupants in the vehicle somehow collided with one occupant in another car, we are trying to establish whether they crossed the centre line before colliding with a power pole."
The other vehicle sustained some damage but the driver was not seriously injured.
Carrington Road remains closed between Great North Road and Segar road and will be for some time.
Serious crash investigators are completing their examination.
