More than 1600 homes were without power in Swanson for close to nine hours after a tree fell over a power line on Thursday afternoon.

It was a cold, dark night for many in West Auckland after a damaged electricity line cut power to 1686 homes.

The outage was reported at 3.22pm on Thursday, and had been restored by midnight.

A spokeswoman for lines company Vector said high winds in the area were causing difficulty and had resulted in a number of trees on lines.

Power was also lost to 500 homes in Waitoki, north of Auckland, due to a tree falling over a power line. Power had been restored to the area as of 9.30pm.

High winds are expected overnight and into tomorrow, so Vector are "keeping an eye on it," the spokeswoman said.

The southwest winds hit as a bitter cold front swept across the South Island from the Antarctic on Thursday.
