Elliot St in Papakura where the assault on the man took place

A good samaritan paid for his act of kindness with his life, according to a witness.

A man in his 60s died following an early morning assault outside a tavern in the south Auckland suburb of Papakura.

In a Facebook post, a woman claiming to be a witness said the man and his family were being "good samaritans" by trying to take a young man home so he wasn't beaten up by another man, "and the old fullar paid with his life".

A man in his 60s died following an early morning assault outside a tavern in the south Auckland suburb of Papakura.

Police were called to the scene on the corner of Elliot St and Great South Rd around 2.40am on Saturday.

The victim was taken to Middlemore Hospital in a critical condition, Detective Senior Sergeant Richard O'Connor said.

He has since died from his injuries and a criminal investigation is now under way.

Two people have been arrested for assault and are being spoken to by police, O'Connor said.

A scene examination was continuing, along with area inquiries.

The family of the dead man were receiving support from police and Victim Support, O'Connor said.

A staff member at the Papakura Tavern said: "We can't make any comments at the moment"
