A diver who was reported missing off the coast of the Coromandel Peninsula has been pronounced dead.
Police, coastguard, fire services and Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter launched a search and rescue operation off the coast of Hahei, following reports of a missing diver about 1.15pm today.
Police later confirmed the body of a deceased 34-year-old man had been found in the water.
Inspector Peter Raynes said the diver had failed to return from South Sunk Rock, a popular diving spot near Hahei.
South Sunk Rock is regarded as one of the top dives in the Mercury Bay area. The rock pinnacle, which can break the surface at a spring low tide, drops away to about 30m and is recommended for experienced divers.
