Residents have reported hailstones in Canterbury, while Wellington suburbs, including Johnsonville, Kilbirnie, Ngaio and Khandallah, have also been lashed.
The MetService said wind convergence combined with afternoon heating should produce scattered heavy showers with hail about eastern areas from Wairarapa to Canterbury.
Wellington resident Karen Samuels told Stuff the storm hit her home in Khandallah "really fast".
"It felt like the windows were going to crack in."
Thunderstorms were also expected, with some being severe in Canterbury, accompanied by the huge hailstorms.
