Dunedin man who won $1m in Bonus Bonds to continue working as gardener
A Dunedin winner wants to buys some secondhand boots and a wheelbarrow, after scooping $1 million.
The man received a call from ANZ confirming he had won in May's Bonus Bonds draw.
"When I was told the news I felt like I couldn't breathe properly I was in shock, so the lady said she would call back in 15 minutes."
Being told the news again did not make it easier to comprehend. He was unable to sleep.
"All night I kept thinking, I misheard her, it was probably $100,000 not $1m."
The man said he would re-invest most of the money, after giving his mum $25,000 to his mother and putting another $25,000 back into Bonus Bonds.
"I will definitely buy myself a new wheelbarrow and a good pair of second-hand garden boots, but other than that, I don't have much else I need."
He planned to live off the interest and reduce his hours working as a gardener and caregiver.
"It's changed my life, because I haven't got a worry in the world now, it's a fantastic feeling.
"I'm not going to go mad, I'll keep a level head, it's not going to change me, I'm still going to be running around with my wheelbarrow and looking after mum."
