A pedestrian is hit by a car outside Wairarapa Hospital in Masterton
A woman has been flown to Wellington Hospital with serious injuries after she was hit by a car in Masterton on Tuesday.
A spokesman for the Capital & Coast District Health Board said the injured woman was in stable condition.
The driver fled the scene, however police located a "person of interest" a short time later.
The incident happened about 5.15pm on Te Ore Ore Rd, outside Wairarapa Hospital.
Earlier police described the car they were hunting for as an older black model, possibly a hatchback, with significant damage from the crash.
According to a witness at the scene, the injured woman was dropping her children at Goju-Ryu Karate dojo across the street from the hospital.
Karate instructor Steve Riley said he ran out of the dojo to see the woman lying on the road by her distraught children.
"There were two little kids looking on and they were really upset," said Riley.
"I just grabbed them and took them inside to look after them. I didn't want them seeing that."
Riley believed it was the first class for the two boys, aged about 7 and 4.
They were picked up by their father 10 minutes later, he said.
Another witness reported seeing police cordons in place between Totara St and Colombo Rd.
Anyone who witnessed the accident is urged to contact police on 06 370 0300 or to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
