New Year's Eve celebrations in Wellington have been scrapped in favour of a family-orientated picnic the next day.
Wellington City Council is not planning any official events for New Year's Eve. Instead, there will be a New Year's Day picnic at Waitangi Park.
Rebecca Martin, the council's events co-ordinator, said holding events on New Year's Eve was not an option.
"The change will allow the events team to rejuvenate an existing event within budget, and to be innovative," she said.
The idea was to provide something for families, she said.
"Residents and visitors who wish to celebrate New Year's Eve by going out are well catered for by the hospitality sector.
"The city is often empty of young people, but young families remain, as well as visitors. The New Year's Day picnic better targets that demographic."
A liquor ban will apply at the picnic, but there are plans for a licensed area where people can buy alcohol.
