A 19-year-old man has been arrested and charged after a hit and run in rural Rotorua which left a teenage girl fighting for her life.
The man has been charged with driving with excess breath alcohol, careless driving causing injury and driving while suspended and will appear at Rotorua District Court on Monday.
The 17-year-old girl underwent surgery at Waikato Hospital this afternoon and is still in a critical condition.
Police said she was struck by a vehicle at about 3.30am on State Highway 33 near Whangamarino School.
They said the victim had "significant injuries" and confirmed she was in a critical state in Waikato hospital.
Rotorua CIB are interviewing a number of people and want to speak to anyone who was travelling on the road between 3am and 3.30am, as well as anyone who heard raised voices or a disturbance in the area.
The road was closed for nearly 10 hours but has reopened with a reduced speed limit.
Staff at the Okere Falls Store said they had been told investigators from Wellington headed to the scene of what had been described as "a hit and run".
