One man is dead and his passenger is seriously injured following a crash between a car and a truck in South Canterbury.
The accident happened around midday at the intersection of State Highway 80 and SH 8, the turn-off from Lake Pukaki.
Two men in their 20s were in the car, which appeared to have turned out in front of the oncoming truck.
Fire crews were required to remove both men from the car.
The car's passenger was initially transported by Westpac rescue helicopter to Timaru Hospital, but will be moved to Christchurch Hospital tonight.
A Westpac spokesman said the passenger was in a life-threatening condition. He said the two men were tourists who had only been in the country for a few days.
The truck sustained little damage.
The crash comes at the end of a dark week on South Island roads, in which six people have been killed in five separate accidents since Monday.
