The Countdown caught fire around 2.30pm.

Fire fighters have contained a blaze at a supermarket on Auckland's Waiheke Island.

Northern fire communications shift manager Megan Ruru said they were alerted to the fire at the Countdown supermarket on Ostend Rd around 2.30pm.

"When the fire fighters got into the building they realised the second floor of the building was caught alight."

Fire fighters contained the fire to the second storey cafeteria. Hot spots are still being dampened down, she said.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Staff and customers had to be evacuated from the Countdown and neighbouring Placemakers building.

Progressive Enterprises, which owns the supermarket, is assessing the damage.

The company could not yet comment on the severity of the fire damage or when the supermarket may reopen.

It is the second time a fire has hit a supermarket on the island.

The Woolworths supermarket was forced to close temporarily in 2009 after a fire tore through the building.
