Police are responding to a motorcycle crash near Kauri Drive, Taupo.

A motorbike crash has blocked the southbound lane of State Highway One near Taupo.

Police were called to the scene on SH1 near Kauri Drive at 11.45am on Sunday, a police spokeswoman said.

She could not comment on the status of the driver and it was unknown if there was another vehicle involved. 

A witness driving through the area said she saw someone being put on a stretcher.

"There was a bike on the ground by the side of the road," the witness said.

Traffic heading south was starting to back up, the witness said.
