Flooding is causing problems for drivers in the Waikato as heavy rain sweeps through the top half of the North Island.

The NZ Transport Agency was urging caution on State Highway 23 between Hamilton and Raglan due to surface flooding. Access along SH25 between Whitianga and Tairua was restricted to 4WD vehicles because of flooding at Wades River.

MetService had warned of periods of heavy rain today for the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty, northern Gisborne and Mt Taranaki.

In Auckland there had been some "useful" rain in the past 36 hours of so, with 90-100mm in the north and 120-150mm in the south, MetService said.
