Storm to bring new snow dumps, gales to South Island later in week
Batten down the hatches - rain, gales and snow are due to hit the country later in the week.
MetService is forecasting rain on Thursday for all the North Island, with heaviest falls in eastern Bay of Plenty, and most of the South Island.
By Friday the forecast has southeast gales, heavy rain and heavy snow for the eastern South Island. Snow could fall to 400 metres in Canterbury and Southland, and to 300m in Otago.
It's still some way away, but for now the MetService forecast is showing gale southerlies in Wellington and Wairarapa on Saturday, and strong southerlies in many other areas.
"Make the most of Tuesday and Wednesday," MetService meteorologist Angus Hines said.
That seems to be good advice for much of the country, but some rain is possible for part of Tuesday for the area from Waikato and the Bay of Plenty north. Most of the rest of the North Island could also have a risk of some morning showers or rain, but they should be gone by lunchtime.
A few isolated morning showers are also possible in coastal Marlborough and Canterbury, while the rest of the South Island is expected to be mainly fine, although with a chance of some morning fog.
Wednesday also isn't flash for everyone, with areas south of Auckland and north of Taihape expected to have showers, while rain is expected to develop in the north and west of the South Island. Apart from those areas, MetService is expecting mostly fine weather.
Auckland is forecast to have a few showers turning to afternoon rain with a 16C high on Tuesday. Wednesday looks better with minimal chance of showers and a 17C high. On Thursday the rain could be heavy, then there's a chance of showers on Friday and Saturday.
Wellington is looking at a mostly fine Tuesday with an 11C high and dying southerlies. Wednesday is forecast to be fine with strengthening northerlies and 13C.
That northerly could rise to gale strength on Thursday with occasional rain. While the northerlies die out on Friday, southerly gales and showers are on the cards for Saturday.
Christchurch is expected to have some morning cloud then a fine Tuesday and 11C, then a fine Wednesday with 13C. Rain develops later on Thursday and northerlies turn southerly overnight. On Friday the rain could be heavy and the southerlies are expected to be strong.
