A dying father's Christmas wish for his family is 27,000 steps closer to being realised thanks to the generosity of Kiwis.
Cancer victim Clinton Tata's story was publicised by Fairfax yesterday.
The 36-year-old father of five has been battling kidney cancer since August and has been given limited time to live.
He said seeing his children on Christmas morning was his ultimate wish.
His family was trying to raise the money to pay for specialised treatment overseas.
Donations started to flood into the givealittle.co.nz website as soon as his story appeared.
By 11.30am today the total had reached $27,003.81, just short of the family's target of $30,000.
Clinton and wife Gloria's children are aged 7 to 14 and they have custody of their 2-year-old nephew.
Tomorrow he has an appointment at a private Epsom clinic to see if he will be eligible for targeted radiotherapy treatment on a 12-centimetre tumour in his back.
"It means there is a light at the end of the tunnel for us," Gloria Tata said. "To me, I've done everything I can to help fight this battle."
A doctor, who has relocated from Melbourne, might be able to do the treatment in Auckland. If not, the family will seek treatment in Australia.
The funds raised will be used towards this treatment and Clinton Tata also hopes to go to Germany to get more treatment to remove tumours.
Over the last 24 hours donations have been rolling in for the Manurewa family from as far away as Iraq, the United Kingdom and Australia.
The article is circulating on Facebook pages all over the country.
Numerous food donations, gifts for the children and vouchers from the Mad Butcher have also come into the Manukau Courier office.
Clinton Tata said the response was "unbelievable and amazing" and it just kept gaining momentum.
"I'm a little scared and anxious as I don't want to let people down. But it has made me more determined to fight this battle," he said.
