Police have named a 73-year-old man who was killed after the car he was driving collided with a freight train west of Auckland this morning.

Coatesville man Ronald Charles Murphy died at the scene at Joyce Adams Place crossing, on State Highway 16, Waimauku, police said.

Earlier today, Provenance Eatery manager Dave Donoghue, who works at a cafe overlooking the crash scene said the ute was completely flattened by the impact.

"No-one saw it but we heard it," he said.

"I noticed the horn, the train driver definitely had it going for a long time and then we heard the crash."

Murphy's family is being supported by Victim Support.

The police serious crash unit is investigating.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
