A woman was left critically injured after being shot at a house in Te Aroha, Waikato this afternoon.

The 19-year-old was shot once but suffered injuries to her right leg, and to her chest,  Detective Senior Sergeant Graham Pitkethley said.

The woman was treated at the scene by ambulance and taken to Waikato Hospital where she was listed as critical but stable.

Pitkethley said officers were speaking to a "number of people" from the house.

"Police are working to establish the circumstances of just what has happened. We are not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident."

Pitkethley said while it was too early to speculate, the incident served as a reminder that firearms needed to be respected and treated as loaded at all times.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
