A man who climbed onto a structure overlooking Auckland's busiest motorway has been arrested but has left the city's transport system jammed.

Police say the man climbed onto the gantry over northbound lanes of State Highway One, leading up to the harbour bridge, at around 11 am.

Police tried to persuade him down but shortly after 1.30pm a policeman went up and arrested the man.

The Transport Agency says all lanes have been reopened but it will take some time to clear the congestion.

A queue of slow moving northbound traffic had extended south of the Greenlane interchange during the incident.

Motorway traffic is also blocking inner city roads as motorists seek alternatives to the St Mary's Bay area.
