Some pet lovers will go to great lengths for their furry friends, including an Upper Hutt couple who have posted a $5000 reward to get back their missing staffy Amber.

''I just love her to bits. I don't care about the money - if someone can front up with her they'll get five grand just like that, they can have it any way they want it,'' business owner Ian Ferguson said.

Amber went missing from the couple's Mt Marua property just after 9am on Tuesday, which Ferguson said was unusual because the ''cool dog with a lovely nature'' never leaves the property.

Ferguson's worst fear is that the four-and-a-half year brindle purebred - who he considers ''just like one of my kids'' - has been stolen to order and sold into underground dog fighting.

''That would tear me to bits. If I find any bastard who had taken her for that ... I know what I'd say.''

His wife Lois was devastated: ''They're with each other all the time - they're joined at the hip.''

The couple were at their wits' end and had exhausted every avenue in trying to track down their precious pooch including letterbox drops, social media pleas, posters, the police and getting friends involved in the search.
