It may be the festive season of Christmas, dominated by traditional red and green colours, but a touch of bright blue made a startling entrance in another celebration.

The Hindu celebration of riotous colours hit Auckland's Queen St today.

Nikee Bond painted her self blue for the festival Ratha-Yatra, also known as the Festival of Carts.

Festival goers planned to pull a brightly-coloured chariot carrying  Lord Jagnnatha up Auckland's main street.

Celebrations were followed by music, dance and eating at Mission Bay beach.

The festival traditionally involves carrying deities through the streets in chariots - and is credited with gifting the English language with the word juggernaut from the unstoppable chariots carrying Lord Jagannath.
