Two hunters are being interviewed by police after a German tourist was shot in the chest near Gisborne.
The 23-year-old man was in a stable but critical condition in Gisborne Hospital, police said.
The tourist was accidentally shot with a large calibre rifle from close range while hunting goats with two friends in the Waihirere rural area.
The incident occurred around 4.30pm yesterday.
Police had spoken with his parents in Germany and advised them of the situation.
The Gisborne CIB are leading the investigation. They are not looking for anyone else and the firearm has been recovered.
