Christmas tragedy in Northland car crash

There has been a tragic start to Christmas morning after a man was killed and two seriously injured in a car crash in Northland.

The deceased man was 21-year-old Sandy Paul Waenga Brown of Paua.

The crash occurred on State Highway 1 near Paua Station on Cape Reinga around 2.30am.

Police said the driver, a 21-year-old female, lost control after rounding a moderate bend and slid, hitting a bank.

The vehicle rolled and the front seat passenger was thrown from the vehicle.

Ambulance officers attended but were unable to revive the man.

The driver was flown to Whangarei Hospital by helicopter with serious injuries.

A second 33-year-old female passenger was transferred to Kaitaia Hospital with lesser injuries.
