Emergency services were called to the scene on Tairua Whitianga Rd around 12.45pm. Police said the car had gone off the road and down a bank.

Two children and four adults were involved in the crash, and one of them was trapped in the wreckage.

The road has been opened, but has limited access, said Inspector Shawn Rutene. People travelling between Tairua and Whitianga should expect delay.

Police are warning of further ''pockets'' of congestion as far south as Waiouru on State Highway 1.

It will be fully opened when the serious crash unit has finished its examination of the crash.

A rescue helicopter based in Whitianga has been called to the scene.
