A woman's body was found in the Bay of Islands this morning after she failed to return from a walk last night.
The Coastguard was informed of a missing person on Moturoa Island about 8pm yesterday, Coastguard duty officer Peter Seymour-Nash said.
"We were tasked to take a party of land search and rescue members across, and also perform a shoreline search for the missing woman.
"At that point nothing was seen of the missing lady, the search went on for quite some time and they departed in the early hours of this morning - at 4.40am they headed back to Waitangi."
The search was to continue from 9am, but the Coastguard was informed at 7.20am a body had been located in Opua.
"The lady had unfortunately died.
"I don’t know how she died, whether she died in the water or whether she was found in the water."
