A baby has been flown to hospital in a critical condition and several other people are seriously hurt after a crash near Raumati South, which has delayed motorists travelling north.
The baby, aged 18 months, was taken to Wellington Hospital by the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter after the accident at about 4pm which blocked the northbound lane of State Highway One for more than an hour this afternoon.
The road has now reopened but traffic had been delayed for more than three hours by the crash in which two adults from the same vehicle were also taken to hospital in a serious condition.
The Serious Crash Unit was investigating, police said.
Motorists heading north were being advised to delay travel or to take alternative routes as traffic continued to move slowly south of the crash, New Zealand Transport Agency spokesman Anthony Frith said.
The road surface had to be sprayed after the crash which brought further delays as motorists had to move slowly past the crash site, Mr Frith said.
"We want to thank everyone for their patience and encourage them to take care we don't want any more accidents like this as we're hoping for another low road toll for the year."
