A helicopter crew used night vision goggles to rescue a patient in a remote area of the North Island central plateau this morning.

About midnight the Palmerston North rescue helicopter was called to Rotokuru Reserve at Tangiwai, near Ohakune, where a Hawke's Bay man in his 60s was dealing with a medical emergency.

Police and fire crews on the ground helped get the man on the helicopter, where he was treated by the on-bord St John paramedic.

He was then flown to Palmerston North Hospital, arriving shortly before daybreak.
